A type 1 diabetic is at risk for hypo or hyperglycemia during exercise?

Hypo most likely because when you exercise your blood sugar go down. So if you exercise when your too low you very well could step into a hypo. But I do think its possible to go into a hyper. if you exercise beside ketones or when your sugar is too high. Not exactly sure why.
People get hypos when they exercise because they are burning extra carbs that would own been burned (not the right word, but OK) by the insulin that was still working inside them.
People will step high from exercise itself if they release epinephrine (adrenaline) while they're exercising.

Actually both. Exercise increases the need of glucose in the cell. If there is enough insulin, glucose can enter within them and satisfy the increased need of sparkle.
If there is too much insulin, too much glucose leaves the bloodstream and gets within the cells, and obviously it will effect hypoglycemia
If there is too few insulin, cells will try to carry energy from other sources to use it during the exercise, increasing glucose in the bloodstream that cannot be used because it won't enter the cell, causing ketosis and dehydration.
hyperglycemia occur due to release of stress hormones approaching glucagon.adrenaline.cortisone which cause gluconeogensis or increase of glucose in blood by its release from liver to blood .
